In 1983 there was a TV documentary about the "moon walk" that showed the original tapes followed by enhanced copies of the same material. The difference was astonishing! It also convinced me that the low quality VCR tapes amateurs used could be enhanced to make 'B' movies.
Then I realized that decent-quality videos could be made using low-cost lighting, etc., to study basic movie production. All of the ingredients were there; script, location, lights, props. Everything could be done inexpensively because the big expense of film stock and developing was eliminated.
I had a fairly large area available at my office on Hollywood Boulevard, where the idea could be tested, so I registered the business name, Hollystar Pictures, and began inviting wannabes and hopefuls to take part in producing VCR movies for practice and study.
Even with the help of Mel Pogue, publisher of Hollywood Casting Call Magazine, I was unable to overcome the resistance to new ideas in the minds of potential students. They would spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars to practice "on film." I was offering them the same opportunity on tape for a tiny fraction of the price.
During the late 1990's I decided to take Dov Simmons' Hollywood Film Institute film-making course. I then reactivated Hollystar Pictures as a "production company" and embarked upon development and production of Legacy of Evil a low-budget/no-budget slash-and-splash horror picture SHOT IN 35MM FILM!
It was moving toward the first shoot scheduled for February 2000 when I experienced an attack of congestive heart failure. During the resulting two week hospitalization my angel flew away with the money-bags, and the project collapsed.
Now, with the craze of American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, So You Think You Have Talent, etc., etc., I believe something can still be done to benefit Hollywood Hopefuls, Wannabes, and Neverwuzies.
